Posted on December 29, 2020

At Cardinal Orthodontics, we have compiled a list of the top 10 most common orthodontic questions.

1) How old do you have to be to get braces?

You can get braces at all different ages! Braces typically are not recommended until around the age of 10, but everyone has their own unique case. At Cardinal Orthodontics, we do our best to avoid “Phase 1” cases (braces with baby teeth), because we strive to have our patients in braces only ONCE! By using our high tech brackets and wires, we are able to achieve the same amazing results waiting until all permanent teeth are in.

If you think you or your child could benefit from orthodontic treatment, schedule a complimentary exam with our doctor today! We offer both in-office and video consults that can fit into any busy schedule. Click here to schedule.

2) How much do braces cost?

One of the most commonly asked orthodontic questions is regarding pricing. At our practice, prices vary depending on multiple factors. Expenses can also vary based on treatment options (braces vs. Invisalign), and insurance plans. Here at Cardinal Orthodontics, we offer braces and Invisalign for the same price, and have awesome payment plans that can fit any budget!

3) How long will I need to wear braces?

Each patient’s treatment time is different based on the severity of their case. At Cardinal Orthodontics, our average treatment time is only 16 months! When you schedule your free consultation with our practice, we will give you an estimated treatment time before you even decide to get started.

4) Do braces hurt?

Getting braces put on does not cause the patient any pain whatsoever. For the first few days, at most a week, you may feel some tightness occurring as your mouth adjusts to the change. Any over the counter pain medications such as Tylenol will help with the mild discomfort.

5) What can I eat with braces?

Eating with braces at first can be a bit tricky while adjusting to your new eating habits. We recommend staying away from anything hard or crunchy to help avoid breaking a bracket. Watching your sugar intake is also key while wearing braces to avoid cavities and decalcification (white spots).

6) Which is better, braces or Invisalign?

Braces and Invisalign both work great and get the job done! Traditionally, braces are better for more complex/ severe cases such as closing gaps, impacted canines, etc. Invisalign is great for complex cases and esthetic purposes. Ask your orthodontist what your treatment options are before getting started so you’re able to make the best decision for yourself! There are pro’s and con’s to both forms of orthodontic treatment. Ultimately it comes down to what will fit your lifestyle the best!

7) How long does it take to put braces on?

Putting braces on typically takes about an hour give or take. It is a very simple and straightforward appointment.

8) How do I care for my braces?

Caring for your braces means caring for your overall dental health. It is very important that you take your time cleaning around your brackets and wires where plaque likes hide! We recommended brushing your teeth about 3 times a day while wearing braces and flossing at least once a day. Fluoride rinse is also recommended to help prevent against cavities.

When patients get their braces on at Cardinal Orthodotnics, we give them a goody bag filled with items that will help them care for their braces.

9) How often do I have appointments?

Towards the beginning of treatment we typically see most patients every 8 weeks. As treatment progresses we will start seeing patients more often between 4-6 weeks depending on how everything is progressing.

10) What happens when my braces come off?

Retainers after orthodontic treatment is extremely important in maintaining the smile you worked so hard for. After your removal appointment, we will take impressions of your teeth so we can make your retainers to take home that same day. Retainers are to be worn for as long as you would like your teeth to stay straight. At Cardinal, we recommend nightly retainer wear for a minimum of 10 hours!

How much do retainers cost?

Every orthodontist has a different price when it comes to retainers. At Cardinal Orthodontics, we believe your smile is a lifelong investment. This is why we offer all of our patients FREE RETAINERS FOR LIFE! That’s right. If you ever lose, or break a retainer, we replace them at no extra cost. This guarantees you a smile that will last a lifetime.
