Braces-Friendly Foods to Enjoy This Summer

Posted on July 17, 2019

Summer is a great time of year! Relaxing, vacations, and enjoying fun barbecues with friends and family. We want to remind you that there are some summer foods that are not braces-friendly. There are just as many, however, that are!

Foods to avoid while wearing braces:

  • Corn on the cob. The corn itself is fine, but make sure to cut it off the cob before eating!
  • Tough meat. This can often times be difficult to chew. Try sticking with tender roast beef or chicken.
  • Sticky snacks such as caramel marshmallows and gummy bears can get stuck in your braces and/or loosen your brackets.
  • Pretzels and corn chips. If you want to enjoy chips or crackers, reach for a thin or light variety.
  • Be careful of raw vegetables. We want you to eat your veggies! But be sure to cut these up into smaller pieces and chew them on your back teeth.
  • Hard candies. Chewing on hard candy can easily result in a broken bracket.

Summer foods to enjoy while wearing braces:

  • BBQ meats such as chicken, fish, and even ribs as long as it is cut off the bone.
  • Soft fruits and vegetables, such as grapes, strawberries, and melon.
  • All varieties of cheese!
  • Soft breads and rolls.
  • Baked beans.
  • Pasta salad- hot or cold.
  • Pop sickles or ice cream.
  • Soft cookies or crackers.

By choosing braces-friendly foods this summer, you can avoid extra trips to the orthodontic office and spend more time doing what you enjoy. To learn more about foods you can eat with braces, click here.
