Common Misconceptions about Braces | Questions & Myths

Posted on March 26, 2019

There are many misconceptions and myths about braces that have been debunked time and time again. Here are just a few of the most common questions/concerns people have before getting their braces put on:

1.”Orthodontic treatment is only for cosmetic reasons” …False!

  • Improved facial structure and a beautiful smile are easily noticeable, but there are many other benefits to orthodontic treatment. For example, having straight teeth makes it easier to maintain good oral hygiene. When teeth are overlapping and crowded, it’s often hard to get in tight spaces with a tooth brush. This can result in cavities, plaque build up, and even bad breath.
  • Orthodontic treatment also fixes improper bites that a person may have (ex: overbite, underbite, crossbite). This will improve everything from how they bite down, chew food, and speak! By correcting a person’s bite, their entire facial structure can change.

2. “Having braces increases your chances of being struck by lightening” …False!

  • Having braces has nothing to do with your chances of being struck by lightening. This is a myth that was created to scare people who had metal in their mouth!

3. “You can’t play a musical instrument with braces” …False!

  • You may need to wear a bumper on your braces while adjusting, but you can definitely still play your favorite instrument while wearing braces!

4. “Braces are only for kids and teenagers” …False!

  • This is a common misconception, but it could not be further from the truth. Braces are for everyone! As long as your teeth are healthy, you can get braces at any age.

5. “Having braces will set off metal detectors” … also False!

  • The metal in your braces is extremely lightweight and not what airport metal detectors are looking for. You can rest assured knowing that this is one last thing to worry about while traveling.
